is less than 2 miles away with a great selection of food and gift shops, butchers, post office, small Sainsbury’s and Co-Operative. The fabulous Biggar & Upper Clydesdale Museum and shop, the beautiful Biggar Puppet Theatre, the scenic Biggar Golf Course and the delicious Taylor’s ice cream are all on your doorstep.
In October the annual Biggar Little Festival celebrates the arts with all manner of concerts, exhibitions and activities and the finale to the year happens on the 31st December when a huge bonfire is lit at the top of the town, a site probably not witnessed anywhere else!
Continue through Biggar and you will find the world heritage site at New Lanark, Robert Owen’s restored workhouse and find out what life was like in the 1800’s.
Tinto hill an outlying part of the Southern Uplands, dominates the view to the south. The walk to the summit at 711m is well worth it for the views. Also close to Biggar is Culter Fell (748m) where on a clear day you can see from the Cumbrian Lake to District up to the Scottish Highlands. The highest hill in the south of Scotland is Broadlaw (840m) closely followed by Dollar Law (817m). There may be sheep farming and sporting activity in the area, so care should be taken when accessing the hills at all times especially in the spring or late summer. Please keep your dog on a lead.
Continuing west down the M74, visit Drumlanrig Castle or the Pink Palace as it sometimes known due to the reddish colour of the sandstone it is built with. One of the homes of the Duke of Buccleuch, with its grand rooms and furniture. It has marvellous woodland walks, mountain biking and a fabulous children’s adventure playground.
The pretty town of Peebles is one of the most popular in the Scottish Borders and is reached in 25 minutes with its swimming pool, Gytes Leisure Centre Sports Hall – Gym and the Eastgate theatre which has films and concerts. Neidpath castle should not be missed. It has been a source of inspiration for the 19th century authors Sir Walter Scott and William Wordsworth, and some of the scenes in films The Bruce, Merlin and Joan of Arc were shot here.
A further 5 minutes from Peebles is the world class mountain biking centre of Glentress and Innerlethen, one of the 7 stanes centres.

Cycling Find a wealth of information and details on all cycling routes in the area including the Tweed Cycle Way which starts at 650 ft above sea level in Biggar and finishes on the coast in Berwick-upon-Tweed, It is a waymarked cycle route 89 miles long running through the heart of the Scottish Borders with the River Tweed as its linking theme. Biggar Little Festival
Running from Thursday 16th October to Sunday 26th October with an exciting, diverse and fun packed ten days of music, the arts, drama, comedy and literature.
Whitmuir The Organic Place A small family farm with fabulous food hall and farm shop, licensed restaurant and art gallery. Open seven days a week, they raise organic cattle, pigs, sheep, chickens and turkeys and grow organic vegetables, salads and soft fruit. All meat is butchered on the farm.
Fishing On The Tweed and the Clyde …. the Tweed one of the top Scottish salmon fishing rivers; the Clyde, hard to beat for trout and grayling fishing; the Nith, Annan and Border Esk, often overlooked by those in a hurry to reach the highlands!
